Trash the Dress

Recently, my photographer friend, Jessica Schmitt, came to me with the idea of a "Trash the Dress" session in Central Park. I had never heard of this idea before, but basically, it's when a bride has portraits done in her wedding dress post wedding day. Usually, these pictures are done in a setting where the bride disregards what happens to the dress. It's more about capturing a fun moment or maybe something meaningful to the bride... something about her personality.

For me, a snow day in Central Park was the perfect "Trash the Dress" scene. Not only am I am known for loving the snow, but my husband actually proposed to me in the snow, so I jumped at the opportunity when the white stuff started falling this January.

I never got my dress cleaned after the wedding (over a year ago), so the idea of wearing my gown outside again (even though the bustle was broke) didn't phase one bit. What's a couple more stains? Whatever stains were left in my dress today will probably be there forever, so I figured why not get another wear out of my wedding dress?

The experience was completely liberating and something I recommend for any new bride who loves their dress, but can't see the value in having it cleaned to sit in a box for the rest of her life. My "Trash the Dress" session with Jessica was just a plain old fun excuse to play dress up again in my favorite gown. Who says your wedding day is the only day you get to be princess?! Tack on another day too... your "Trash the Dress" day! I could totally see this becoming a wedding tradition...

I would do it again in a heart beat with Jessica. After all, you can only trash your dress so much in the snow. Maybe next time (if there is one), I can involve paint somehow... ?

This Valentine's Day you may need help figuring out something unique and romantic to do with your special someone... Chocolates and teddy bears only work for so many years in a row until you want something a little outside of the norm. Maybe you want to spice things up a bit? I kinda recently stumbled upon this product and just HAD to share! It's called Love Is Art and it's basically an art kit that provides everything you and another person need to create a piece of art together... maaaaaaybe without clothes on!

My husband and I may or may not have done this, but if we did... we would probably recommend! We might also highly recommend buying extra loofahs and exfoliating soap... if we ever did this.

My humble comic book series...

I have this twinkle of an idea for another comic book of mine to go with the other two I have previously created (find a little about them here). This next one will be about choosing between New York and Texas. And hopefully substantially longer than my previous two.

This creative itch got even stronger when I saw this cute little comic book in Barnes and Noble recently called "Empire State" by Jason Shiga. I wish I could create something so simply beautiful. I can't wait to read it. Anyway...

When I did my other two books (covers shown above), I really was doing them only as fun... not so much to challenge myself. With this next comic book that I create, I really want to put some muscle into it. Also, it just occurred to me the other day that I can self-publish on Lulu. Their prices are very reasonable and they do good quality work. Why have I never thought of this before? I remember I hand copied and pasted my first comic book (The Breakup - shown above) way back when I was in community college in San Antonio, Texas and I sold copies at the First Friday celebration near Blue Star Art Space for $5! I don't suppose anyone has a copy of that lying around would they? I honestly don't know where my copy of the book is and it was done well before I had access/knowledge of Photoshop, etc... so no digital copy exists unfortunately. With moving from San Antonio, to Austin, to New York, I seem to have misplaced my copy somewhere and I would love to have it again for my portfolio. Contact me if you happen to have a copy (doubtful, but hey... worth a shot)! And fingers crossed that I'll be able to get this next comic book on paper soon...

First Anniversary!

As of August 1st this year, Shawn and I have been Mr. and Mrs. Waite for a full year already!

The time has really flown by and I just realized that I never posted wedding pictures from our day. Which is surprising because our photographer, David Kerry Hannan, was fantastic!

I remember when planning our wedding, I could not get enough of browsing through websites trying to find ideas for our wedding day. So here's some photos all you future brides... I hope it offers some inspiration for your big day! And any brides in NYC, definitely look into any of our vendors for more information on how they might be a part of your celebration. They were all amazing. We still have people tell us that was the most fun wedding they've ever been to and throughout the night the dance floor was never less than half full... of course we have amazing friends and family that ensured a good time no matter what!

I love weddings... and PS. I still look at blog posts all the time about weddings :)

Sleep No More

Sleep No More, now showing in NYC, is quite the unique theatrical experience and I highly recommend checking it out! The audience members are actually more like participants. Everyone must wear this same white mask with a pointed nose and you simply walk around this old hotel (themed to be in the thirties I believe) and follow actors as you find them. You aren't sure at any given time where you are at in the story line and among the four floors that this takes place on, you can find something new in every room no matter where you are or what point in the three hour time period you are at. Even if you never found actors to follow through the storyline, the decor for this event is captivating enough for the visit. I don't recommend it for the queasy or easy to spook... or if you are afraid of seeing a little skin (ok a lot at some points). Let's just put it this way... at one point during the show I was grabbed by the main lady after she took a bath into a cemetery because I was, "her friend". It's a weird experience... but as long as you're living in NYC, you might as well check it out at least once because where else do they have this kinda weird stuff?

Rebranding myself

Whenever I'm slow at work (of course) I get paranoid that I'll be laid off soon. Then, I start thinking how I need to update the ol' resume and website. What should my new mission statement be? What do I really want out of a next job, if I did get canned? Actually, I really DO need to update my website, regardless of whether or not I get laid off anytime soon because it's still under my maiden name... and I'm the very proud owner of my husband's name now. Anywho, today was one of those days, so I started my re-branding (new name included). This is the tiny nugget that I have so far. Lots more branding ideas brewing in my head. How's it look?

Last year, my husband and I participated in the Manhattan location of the Walk to Defeat ALS. In 2010, we were walking in honor of our family friend Tim, but sadly, this year we will instead be walking in his memory. We were so inspired by the stories that we heard during last year's fund-raising that we want you to know that we are doing the walk again this year and would love any new or continued support!

Sometimes when money is given to charities, the generous people who donate may not be aware of all that it is accomplishing. I want to share with you just a few things that the $1.58 Million Dollars raised by just the Greater NY chapter raised from last year's walk has done to help truly move forward in the defeat of Lou Gehrig's Disease:

It supported over 600 PALS in the NY chapter; which means patients and families with loved ones suffering from the disease, had a support system by their side to walk them through it both medically and emotionally. Visit this website for support information in the NY area if you or someone you know is going through this disease.
A new gene was identified as being linked to ALS, which will hopefully, eventually help to develop a medication that will one day cure the disease. To find out more about the research that your contributions have and will continue to go towards, visit this website!

Wish Upon a Wedding

While watching "Secret Millionaire" tonight, I started thinking "What would I give thousands of dollars to if I were a millionaire" and it came to me... I would help patients who were facing life threatening illnesses have a brilliant wedding that they would always be able to remember. A day filled with all of their family and friends in one place. This is the type of organization that I would give to.

Reasons being:

1. I absolutely adore weddings. I think they are one of the most treasured memories in someone's life. It's one of the few occasions when everyone that a couple loves is in one place... sharing one, happy memory and having a good time. I would love to help others have this experience.

and

2. I get teased sometimes for being a hypochondriac. I think it's because I'm extra in-tune to my allergies and how my body feels, so some disturbances that would normally be brushed off, I immediately go to WebMD to try and diagnose myself. I also went to a medical based high school which didn't help. But these two things HAS hightened my sense of mortality that I've always had.... even since I was little I have recognized that life is too short. This helps me really try to make the most out of every minute. A wedding is all about embracing the love you have in your life and celebrating it. I would love to help a family forget about any illnesses for one day and just live in the moment!

Now... obviously, I don't have a thousand dollars to donate, but maybe there's something else I can do for this organization? I emailed the recently opened NJ/NY chapter to see if I can be put to use. With my full-time job, freelance work, wedding that I am involved in this year and my own family to attend, I don't have a ton of time for this... but I felt compelled to reach out after finding this organization.

Perhaps I can do some wedding invites for a couple? Or one day open an Austin, TX chapter?

I definitely thought I should share this information at the very least.

Yoga for Weddings

I practice yoga pretty regularly and it's offered me many benefits. Not only is it a great way to stretch after a week of my usual running, but it also is a great upper body work out, which is something I generally don't focus on. Of course, another benefit of my regular yoga practice has been an ongoing practice of reaching serenity. To those that know me, it may surprise you that I have anxiety sometimes... rather it be about a work assignment or a larger life issue, everyone has problems handling stress sometimes, and yoga has been a great place for me to try and reel that in.

I recently got married and throughout the planning process, yoga was a place that I could escape to and not worry about the budget, time lines or what my dress was actually going to look like after it was finished being altered. I am honored to be in a wedding this summer and when the topic of planning a bachelorette party came up, my mind immediately went to yoga instead of a night out drinking... or at least a Cardio Strip class! I always feel more revived after doing something healthy and healing for myself, rather than drinking. Maybe it's because I am getting older, but I can't handle even one stiff drink like I used to.

Seems like this idea of a private yoga class with your girlfriends for a bachelorette party has already been thought of! If you just Google "Yoga for Bachelorette Party" several articles will come up showing how this is a growing trend. One such group of trainers that cater to these clientele is Yoga For Weddings. All I can say is that if this graphic design/production work thing doesn't pan out for me, I may have to get certified to teach yoga! After all, I did briefly teach aerobics and this would blend my love for weddings and a healthy life style into one nifty little package. Why didn't I think of this sooner?

The Valentine's Day Diamond Dig

I've been at Topps for over two and a half years, and it's easy to get caught up in my daily time lines and not think about the impact that our products can have on people. Well, this recently changed when Topps announced a promotion they are doing in the VERY near future. Topps is holding a Diamond Ring Dig on Valentine's Day in honor of their 60th Anniversary! What this means in short is that a lucky man will have the opportunity to win a diamond ring worth $10,000 and propose to his girlfriend on Valentine's this year. Since I am pretty much obsessed with love and weddings, I had to share this contest! I'm excited about seeing the entries and hearing about the proposal that Topps will be a part of on February 14th!

Personally, I'm not one for a showy proposal. My husband proposed in private in a park while it was snowing one New Year's Eve, but some people love the lime light! You don't get much more center of attention than in Grand Central Station! And guys, if you're nervous, I'm sure there will be a plenty big crowd to cheer you on. I just love a good love story, whether it starts on a hand held walk through a park, via Jumbo Tron at a Yankees game or a ring pit in Grand Central Station .... as long as they say "Yes"!

Once upon a time, back in 2007, I helped a woman named Jenny Kim develop a logo for her clothing line, Overall Baby. I hadn't heard anything about her line of colorful, cute overalls for kids in quite some time until today! Turns out, Overall Baby sales are going great, and are even selling internationally in Australia, Canada, Malaysia and Italy. I was needless to say, thrilled to hear the great news for Jenny and excited to see the logo I developed sewed on a pair of the overalls in person! Shawn and I recently became Mr. and Mrs. Waite and we're excited to post pictures from our photographer which should come very soon. Until then, here's pictures of some of my favorite wedding cards that we received. I always take careful consideration when picking out cards for gifts because I have such a passion for working with paper and personal sentiments. It was hard to pick my favorite, but I think it's between the toaster and salt & pepper card!

I also would like to mention that I always appreciate hand made cards as well, being as that I design cards myself. My sister-in-law, Rebecca Levan, has a true gift for making scrapbook-feel type cards and products, and she made me a lovely one.... I need to photograph it so I can show it here :)

Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis 40K Card!

Working for Topps, I've seen things embedded into trading cards that I never thought could be! Items including, but not limited to, handkerchiefs, hair, jelly beans and dinosaur fossils. Sometimes, these items that we embed into our trading cards are more like treasures that I feel personally belong in a museum, rather than the hands of some random person looking for a Jeter card that happened to stumble upon something much more valuable or timeless. I guess I get concerned that a piece of history could be lost forever or thrown away by someone who's really only interested in a particular player, not the aspect of trading cards that captures a moment in time or part of pop culture. One recent card that we made, and I had the pleasure of composing, is selling on Ebay right now for a whopping $40,000! It's a dual cut signature of Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis. Maybe a museum collector will see and bid on this card and I can sleep a little better at night. What are your thoughts on trading cards such as these?

I've said before that I love design, no matter what medium it's in and home design is no different. I actually toyed with the idea once upon a time of being an architect! After all, I was great at math and loved geometric shapes. I thought my flare for composition and color could work well in the profession of architecture, but for one reason or another, I went into Advertising am left blogging about homes that are inspiring. I stumbled upon a listing for a KRDB home recently and fell in absolute LOVE with the pictures! I since then have looked through their website and have decided that when my (soon to be) husband and I move back to Austin, Texas, KRDB homes will be the FIRST place we search for our home! Running with the Devil

I'll be running a race this weekend with my cousin... up a ski mountain! It should be a great workout and stress reliever before my wedding next weekend, that is, if I survive! I've done half marathons and 5Ks before, but nothing as strenuous as up a mountain side. Did I mention that the weather for Saturday is supposed to be near record high temps for the North East. Yeah, that's what they're saying. Aside from the accomplishment that I'll feel after completing the race with my cousin, and hopefully leaving him in the dust, I'm looking forward to the view at the peak! My fiancee (as are all spectators) is allowed to take the ski lift up to the peak to meet their runners to enjoy the view. After the race, we're planning on hitting up a waterpark! Sounds like an action packed, fun weekend right before the best weekend of our lives! :)

This one sold on Ebay for $30! I signed one of my cards as "Victoria Waite" and I can't 'waite' to see how much that one will go for. It'll be the only one in the world. I'm a fan of design in all mediums, whether it be graphic design, invitation design, interior design and even automotive design! I frequently forget that cars even exists outside of the constantly moving rivers of new york city's streets. Often times, my mind skips over what cars actually represent, but they are much more than just a hunk of materials for transferring you from point A to point B. In so many ways, they represent a person's unique sense of style and if you're like my brother, they represent a passion! My brother and his wife recently opened their store called Rusty Dusty Classics in San Antonio, Texas (my home town - always a Texan)! They have everything you need to make that classic truck you may have been drooling over in magazines or seen salvaged on "Pickers" (that TV show about finding treasured antiques). My brother makes these beautiful, custom fitted, wood rings! He made them for me and my Fiance right after we got engaged. I wear this along with my engagement ring because it means so much to me. He also made one for my Fiance, thoughtfully, because men don't have an engagement ring to wear... and why should they miss out on the fun?

I'm making an alphabet book for my newborn niece, Penelope! Back last December, I threw her mom a baby shower, and I had all the guests draw a letter of the alphabet. I've taken all those pages, and am getting them bound into a book with this image as the cover that I created. When I have the finished book, hopefully I can take pictures and post those images.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately! I've been working on my design skills recently. Doing some online tutorials and reading some books in my down time. It's not quite as fun as drawing, but if I ever want to work full time in designing something, or being creative, I guess I've got to put in some more hours. I'll be back soon.

Creative Showcase Time Again at work!

It's time again for our Creative Showcases so I've been helping some people here lay out their cases with InDesign or in some cases, like this one... it's a 3D case so I'm not laying out the case necessarily (the back, but that's easy)... but I AM doing the rendering of what the case will look like, so it can get final approval to be set up. Fun stuff.
